DOOMED

I'm doomed. For the two days that I was off (Yesterday and Today), I spent the time catching up on sleep and cartoons! And tomorrow's my Evaluation Day yet again! And I've yet to complete all 8 scripts!

Die. I'd probably try to fit everything in by tonight, or I'll tell them the truth tomorrow. Oh well...

There are a lot of mosquito bites that leave scars on me. And I've had millions of beetles land on my head for the past two weeks in the zoo. Oh, and I spotted a spider that had blue thorns attached to its body.

Hahaha, random, I know. But on a more serious note, I hope everyone's doing fine! I've got to admit that I totally lost contact with every single friend! I hope I'll get to catch up during one of my off days.

Off Day

Was called by my boss last night, and was informed that all four of us OJTs were getting offs! But it does not mean that it is all play and no work, because we have to present all 12 scripts to her by Monday! Luckily I am in token 3, because the token 1 feeders actually have 18 scripts. So that makes me pretty fortunate to be in token 3.

Well, the past few days on the zoo has been rather fruitful. I got to meet more colourful personalities. And also watch how the presentors worked under pressure when there was no soundman and when they slipped wrong information of the animals.

I don't know about the rest, but the shows have been making my days more and more sian. I'm not saying the shows are sian, but watching them over and over again, makes everything so... expected. But I must applaud the presentors who made the shows possible. I mean I've been working for less than two weeks, and I'm pretty bored by the usual routine already. And yet, they who have been working for many many years, always show up and present with so much magnificence, and twinkles in their eyes, never failing to grab the attention of the audience.

Well, I am sure that it's pretty boring for me to rattle on and on about my work in the Zoo right? So, I'll end this post with a short quiz that I got tagged. I love quizzes not only because they help to take up time, but also because they let you think of things that you often never question yourself about. So here goes:

Day Off

Well, as the title pretty much suggests, today is my very first off day from working at the zoo for 7 days straight. Despite having the ups and downs, as I walked past the gates of the Zoo for the last time (maybe?) yesterday, many thoughts popped into my head. I was in a dilemma; relieved that after 7 days of work, I finally had a break. But at the same time, I was sad, because I may never be working here again. 7 days was just enough to make me want more and be part of the family in the zoo.

I was thankful that this job made it an eye-opener for me. Because it not only exposed me to the working world, but I also got a chance to see the many types of people around. I even made fantastic friends, not only with the staffs there, but also with the OJTs: Nicolas and Joanna who were property agents, Nicholas who is 20 plus, and has a passion for his percussion and church.

I also had a great time in husbandry, despite being the slowest. But I think I did manage to improve my speed over the couple of days. I realized that all it took was to set my mind to it.

The staffs in the zoo were an excellent bunch of people, who were always there for you, and willing to share information with you. They were very serious in their job, but they also joked around every once in a while. Because of them, I have a whole lot of greater respect for all the staffs in the zoo. I learned a lot about the animals through them, and also saw how they had so much respect for the animals, and vice versa.

But one thing I regret the most was, to set the impression that I was the quiet one. Back in school, I was titled the "Laughing Machine" in class. People had to shut me up, and stay clear of me whenever they had sweets. But as usual, I have the nasty habit of observing people more , and thus seldom open up to people unless I feel comfortable around them.

I did not have much confidence when I was an OJT in the zoo, so I seldom opened up to the people around me. Except for Nicolas, who was partnered with me then. Yesterday was the last day, and Joanna, Nicolas and I sat around to talk. Surprising enough, they brought up points that I did not know of. They had the impression that I was very quiet and dainty. But Nicolas actually said that after the few days that he was with me, he realized that I COULD REALLY TALK. Hahah.

But it was only him. The rest, especially the staffs, still think that I am quiet and stuff like that. So we'll see.

Yesterday's evaluation was a so called "Judgement Day" for us. It did not go really well for me. I had the entire scripts down, but when I presented, it was mere regurgitation, which was bad, because they'd rather put a tape recorder there. I was so engrossed in memorising the scripts that I seemed emotionless, which was again bad, because no one would want to listen to some boring person. Not only was I emotionless, but I was rattling away like a speeding train, which was again bad. Hahah. And last, I was loud and clear, which may also be bad, for they would hear every single thing I said, thus I had to be very careful in the choice of words.

Well, I am still waiting for them to call me. If I don't get the job, I would never be disheartened, because this job actually gave me an opportunity to realized how much of a passion these people had for the animals. And passion and experience was all that I was looking for in a job. Not money.

Oh, and while I was an OJT there, I actually got a chance to see a manatee give birth! The baby manatee is really cute. And if you happen to head to the zoo, go to the SPLASH! amphitheater to catch a glimpse of the baby manatee.

For that 7 days there, I got to see most of the animals there. I can't really remember some of them, but I'll try my best. Let me educate (Cheh.. hahah) you on some of the animals that I learned about. And so, here are some of the animals:

Aprilla the elephant. How to spot her? Well, she has pink pigmentation around her neck and ankles. And she's the youngest elephant there. She's really adorable.

Gambir the elephant. How to spot her? Her trunk has a whole stretch of pink pigmentation. She's the most playful elephant there, and her art work is seen as Chinese Calligraphy.

Janti the Elephant. How to spot her? She's the biggest and the oldest elephant there. Now what's unique about her is that she is seen as a future matriarch because she was seen running in to settle the disputes amongst the other elephants.

Smoky the dog. He can be found in the Animal Friendly Show. I think he is a Collie mix. He appears unique because one of his eyes is Grey, while the other in brown. But this dog was actually sold to the zoo because he had anxiety problems. He was afraid of thunder, and practically everything else. I got a chance to touch him, but he was pretty afraid. I did not know him well, but it was like love at first sight. Thankfully for him, he had a best friend there, who is a German Shepard. The reason why the German Shepard is here, is because he was born with genes of flaws.

There are definitely more animals that I am in love with, like the 6 months old White Rhino Baboo.

Did you know :

  • That all 5 species (Sumatrans, Javans, Black, Indian and White) Rhinos are on the brink of extinction because their horns are used to treat illnesses? Their horns are actually made of Keratine, just like our fingernails and hair? Thus they contain no healing properties. So stop buying Rhino Horns to treat your illnesses!
  • A group of Rhino is also known as a Crash of Rhinos
  • Rhinos have poor eyesight but excellent sense of hearing and smell.
  • Ears of Rhinos are able to rotate 180 degrees in the direction to where the sound is coming from
  • Rhinos seem indestructible, but they actually have very sensitive skin, which is prone to sunburns and insect bites.

The orang utans who actually share 97% of our human DNA (the baby Ah Seng is really cute).

The adorable cotton top Tamarins who looked like they had mohawks. They are actually really small, like the size of two of your fists placed atop each other.

Click Here to View Cotton Top Tamarins

Then there are the adorable Asian Small-Clawed Otters. They can be found near the Treetop Trail. They make the cutest sounds ever!

Click Here to View Asian Small-clawed Otters

Heard the squeaking noises? Yeap, those are the sounds that these otters make. Unless you smell it for yourself, you would not believe me when I say that these adorable animals actually give off a pungent smell. Now this is because they are territorial, and they mark the areas from the secretion secreted from their anal glands.

Then there are the Black and White Colobus Monkeys. They have a black coat of fur, but have a white tail. Right in the Singapore zoo, we actually have a baby colobus Monkey, and it is all white! hahah, only a few months later will it then start growing its fur.

Click Here to View Black & White Colubus Monkey

Click Here to View Black & White Colubus Monkey and baby

And the Saki Monkeys!

Click Here to View Saki Money

The one that you are viewing is the Male, while the female has a greyish brown coat of fur.

Last but not least, the polar Bears!

We have Sheba who is 31 years old. She joined the Singapore Zoo in 1978 when she was only 2 years old. Her birthday is on Valentine's Day. She is always sun tanning on the boulders in the enclosure.

We also have Inuka, her son. Inuka in Eskimo Language actually means "Silent Stalker". He is a very special bear not only to the Singapore Zoo, but to Singapore itself. Why? Because he is the very first polar bear to be born in the Tropics, right in the Singapore Zoo. His birthday is on 26th December and was born in 1990.

Inuka is 1.8m tall, and weighs 550kg. However, a full grown polar bear can grow up to 3m tall, and weigh over a 1000kg!

But did you know that when Inuka was born, he actually weighed 450g? How he actually grew so big and strong is because of his mummy's milk. Human's milk contains 4% fats. But Polar Bear's milk contains 48% of fat!

Polar Bears have black skin. And their fur coat is NOT white. It is actually transparent. The reason why we see it as white on TV is because of the snow that reflects on the fur.

Polar Bears are from the North Pole, and you might be thinking : the water confirm very cold one. But, the water in the enclosure is actually at room temperature. However there is a den which the polar bears have excess to, which is at a comfortable 16 degrees Celsius.

In the wild, polar bears feed on Seals. But in the Singapore Zoo, they are given a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and meat. In fact, Inuka's favourite food is Frozen Watermelon.

These are just some of the animals that I learned about. There are obviously more animals to learn. But I must say, the animal, or rather fish that I like the most, is the token feeding session of the Giant Arapaimas.

The first time the fish "jumps" up to take the small fish from the stick, never fails to crack me up. Because everyone will get the shock of their lives, going "woah". Small kids will cry, girls will scream and others will put their hands near the heart at the chest, because they were shocked.

Arapaimas are the largest scaled freshwater fish in the world. They can grow up to 4.5m long, and weigh a hefty 200kg. Another feature that distinguises this fish is the presence of a bony tongue.

Click Here to View Giant Arapaima

In the Singapore Zoo, we have 3 giant Arapaimas, with the largest coming in at 2m long, and weighing almost 120kg.

They can be found in the Amazon Basin and only during high tide, can also be found in flooded forests, swamps and upstream in the creeks.

Only during low tide do they lay their eggs in nests in the hollows of the mud, of the floodplains.

They feed mainly on other species of fish. And are the top freshwater predators. However, if there are any low flying birds or animals, they would of course, consume them!

But despite all these, Arapaimas are on the brink of extinction because they are sought after for their meat, scales and bones. They are also kept as illegal pets.

End of tour!

Day 5 and 6

Well, yesterday and today were actually a blast. I not only managed to keep the dens clean, but I also got praises because I managed to catch up with the faster ones.

There were a couple of hiccups in between, like when I got shoved in the chest by a guy during crowd control. He was apparently not satisfied and did not want to listen to me, thus forcing his way past me, into the already fully packed amphitheater where the show "The Rainforest Fights Back" was on. Not forgetting our Minister Of Defence, Mr Teo Chee Hean, being present yesterday.

But there were many events that covered up the unhappiness. I got alot of waves of goodbyes by the visitors. And for the first time in my Life, spoke Mandarin in the zoo. I even directed some of them to their whereabouts in Mandarin!

Kids blew kisses and adults thank me. I guess that was enough to make my day much happier.

But on a serious note, tomorrow's my evaluation day. And I am a tad bit nervous. It has not been my first speaking infront of people. But this is definitely a first in trying to memorise 4 scripts, regurgitating them in the best tone and fluency, in front of two "judges".

Let's just hope I make it through Doom's Day tomorrow. Hahah.

And for those who texted and tagged me and offered me encouragments, thank you very much. It may seem "aiyah, like that only ah...", but it's the little encouragements like this that actually do motivate a person into achieving his/her goals. Thank you for being my pillar of support!

If I do get the job, find me when you want to have lunch at KFC, got 35% off! hahaha.

Take care. Loves.

4th Day At The Zoo

Today was the most... How should I put it, MOST FUCKED UP DAY.

Please do excuse my foul language, but seriously, today was the most horrendous day I have ever had. Beating even the horrid times I spent in lower secondary.

In short, the things that happened to me were:

  • Almost got ran over by a bus who had a bloody impatient driver who just couldn't wait for me to complete crossing the road.
  • Was disappointed with myself for being the slowest in cleaning the dens, but hey, at least I made it clean.
  • Got briefed (even though it seemed more like a loud lecture) in front of a crowd.
  • Was disappointed that the Senior did not want us to help out.
  • Found it miserable to walk up and down quickly and aimlessly, just because the senior did so.
  • Been through a day that was blazing hot.
  • Got lectured (this time, for real) loudly because the Senior "lost" us. But we were actually at the location on time, and she was not. So, go figure.
  • Was disappointed that people were talking behind me, saying that I was slow and stuff. (But hey, I know I'm sensitive and SLOW, but I am willing to improve. I guess, the piling of issues just did not help me cope well with this).
  • Hated the fucking hot sun which did not help at all.
  • Cleared the issues with the "boss". But my day was indeed down since the start of the day. And to make it worst, I fell down, while on my way home, at the "dirty" T-junction opposite my home where alot of accidents occurred.
  • Got home, and was pissed with certain issues, as usual.

I'm thinking of quitting. Should I? Damn.

But I guess at the end of the day, after some self-reflection, I realized that it wasn't that bad afterall. Despite being fucked up, I did enjoy myself. I memorized 4 scripts in total (and many more to go!), had some fun competing to throw the fruits at the baboons who were high up at the mountains, and even cracked some jokes here and there.

And maybe, just maybe, I'll stay on. For the sake of passion and the love for animals, and nothing else.

Had your day been as bad as mine?

3rd Day At The Zoo

No words cam describe the state of exhaustion that I am in.

For the past three days:

  • I got lost on my way to the reporting office on my second day.
  • I got lost twice in the zoo.
  • Because of the above mentioned, I walked around the entire zoo just to find the places, which were in fact side by side
  • I have to memorize 7-8 pages of script. But I'm being selective, so I'm down with two, and maybe two more?
  • I feel dehydrated because I have not been hydrating myself with enough fluid
  • I have done the cleanings of Lemurs and Rabbits.
  • I realized that Rabbit's poo actually looks like the daily morning Milo cereals that I eat everyday.
  • I got a chance to be Terminator, because I got to clean the dens with jet sprays.
  • Made a fool out of myself many times.
  • Watched all the shows in the zoo for at least 5 times.
  • Made many great friends
  • I got a chance to try to spot the different animals with their names, but they all still looked the same to me. Except the show elephants.
  • I have been walking around the zoo from 8pm to 4.45pm everyday, with breaks in between.
  • I have been having some ups and downs, but everyday brings new surprises.

I am dead beat, but am still looking forward to the evaluation day which would be next Tuesday. Then, I'll be a confirmed Part-Time staff!

And if you're curious, I actually prefer cleaning the dens! But they said that I am a slow cleaner. :(

Want perfect dens must take longer mah, right? Unless I get to be Terminator again! Hahaha.

Day One At The Zoo

Short update.

Today is actually the first day that I am attending the "on job training" at the zoo. It was a pretty fun day because all I had to do was to watch the various animal shows that the "Seniors" brought me to.

I am in the group which is assigned to Token Feeding 3, where we interact and tell visitors about Primates Kingdom (all the monkeys there. Like the Spider monkey and so on.), the Polar Bears, the African Lions, the Elephant Show, and the Orang Utans.

Now just listing it sounds pretty easy, but low and behold the scripts are actually 6-7 pages long! And you have to memorize all of them in a week! It was pretty terrorizing to know that despite completing school, I still have to memorize scripts!!

But here comes the good news, I found out that the $6.50/hour pay was only for "on job training". Once I get accepted as a Part Timer, my pay is actually $8/hour! Pretty impressive isn't it? I was shocked too when I came to know about it.

And I am actually the youngest so far, in the Show crew.

Tomorrow would be a different day, where we will actually get a chance to get our hands dirty to do husbandry, that is, to clean the dens of the animals!

I hope tomorrow would be an enjoyable day, like today.

Raging Hormones

Yesterday was a somewhat tiring day. I woke up earlier that I expected, and so accompanied my mum to her cooking class in Toa Payoh.

It was at the Toa Payoh Student Service Center. It seemed like an after-school daycare, where kids from kindergarten to primary school, come to this center to make friends, read books, use the computer and sign up for activities like the one my mum conducted.

Well, we arrived rahter early, and we were let to a classroom. When we opened the door, we were really surprised. It was really small, like half the size of the containers we used during tutorials in Primary School. The floor was carpeted, there were no sinks, and the place was filled with chairs with "tablets", the ones attached to the chair, where you could flip it about.

My mum and I exchanged gazes and then we approached one of the staffs who helped us clear the area. We then used the dusty tables that were stored behind the class. We carried and arranged the long tables so that it could fit 14 students, and my mum and I.

Then the kids started coming in. Attendance was marked by me, while my mum distributed the items to the individuals. After that was done, we then started teaching the kids step by step, of how to make the non-baking Shepard Pie, and Fruit Salad.

I must say, the kids there were really disciplined. They were very focused on their task, peeling and mashing both the eggs and potatoes. They listened to every instructions we gave. And despite having some who complained about how tiring it was to smash the potatoes, all of them completed their tasks.

Kids being kids, they definitely did shriek in excitement when my mum gave them extra toppings for their fruit salad. Some even "fought" as they stole and ate each other's sausage used in the Shepard Pie. Some accidentally flung eggs on the floor, while others stepped on them. "Aww, gross!" could be heard every now and then. Despite them being only primary school kids, they used terms that "bimbos" used at our age. Hahah

The class was to be conducted from 2 pm to 5 pm. But due to the miscommunication and having to rearrange the chairs and tables, we started at 2.30pm. We expected the class to be slow in their work, but they impressed us and completed their tasks by 3.45 pm. With an hour and a quarter to go, my mum left to buy some sweets, leaving me with them.

That gave me a chance to get to know them better. I played word games with them, like asking them to create new words from the words "Summerville Language Centre". I know it was pretty lame, but they immediately busied themselves with it.

While waiting for my mum to come back, and for them to complete it, I decided to chat with them. I got to know some of their names, whether they had other siblings, and whether they liked the class conducted. They were shy at first, only nodding and shaking their heads. But overtime, they did share a thing or two about themselves.

I then told them that back when I was in school, I hated word games and would always make up disgusting words like anus and mucus. They found it hilarious and actually took down the words. When my mum came back, she told them to get at least 50 words to win a prize. There were definitely "huh.."s along the way, but all of them cooperated by sharing answers with each other.

Once the time limit was up, my mum made them line up to hand her their work. One girl who many said cheated because she was a P6, actually gave a whopping 137 words. She was declared the winner, but in the end, everyone got sweets, but the winner got the most.

There was still extra time, so everyone sat around my mum and I as we simply talked. That was when I realized that kids especially the boys despite being that young, had raging hormones.

We talked about the ingredients used, and my mum simply said "it'll be nicer if you used chicken breast", and that set the whole class bursting in laughter. A P2 boy who had a twin said he wanted human breasts because there was milk. See what I mean?

There were also incidents where this kid kept leaning on me. I thought he just wanted attention, and so I just let him. But it got worst. He would step on my feet, bump my hand with his, and leaned on me every way possible. I found it pretty amusing that a kid that young could be "sexually interested" and thank god the class ended soon enough.

My mum and I then sent them off, waving and hugging some of them. Then there was this boy, by the name of Brandon. He had a sister who was in the class too. He was really slow when packing his bag and kept asking the sister to leave first. I knew he was up to something because he kept buckling and unbuckling his bag. The sister was really bubbly girl and I kept joking around with her, and even helped her in the word challenge.

I guess the sister just didn't realize the awkwardness and how much he wanted her to leave first, and so she waited for him. When his attempt to make her leave first was in vain, he pushed her infront of him as he walked past me. He then quickly pushed a piece of paper and clenched my hand. He then dashed out of the door , but in a very "cool" way. It was really adorable.

When I opened my fist, I realized he actually made an origami "rabbit", I think.

Photobucket

Check out the "Miss Kethlyn". Hahah, it's actually the first time I had a class addressing me as a "Miss", it was usually "Jie Jie".

Well, I think the origami is adorable, having it come from a kid who's much younger than me.

I always tell my friends that if guys gave me pieces of origami hearts or swans and expects me to feel touched, I would not really be bothered about it and would contemplate to whether or not throw it away, because I think that it is very much a waste of time. I mean impressing a girl should come from your character and style, not how many hours you put in to making something that can't be used.

But despite saying that, I do keep all the stuff that people, both guy friends and girl friends, have made for me. And this origami "rabbit" will definitely be in the collection of gifts from others.

Till then

Box Of Nonsense

I was side by side Steve Irwin (the all time best Crocodile hunter ever), crouching behind a bush when all of a sudden, a HUGE mighty leopard sprung from a tree nearby, leaping onto me. I squeezed my eyes shut, for fear of looking at the beast in its eyes. I then kicked and punched, pushing every unfamiliar contact on my body.

Suddenly, everything laid still. there was no movement. Was the beast dead? Couldn't be, unless I was as strong as Xena the warrior Princess.

I had to know what happened. I used every strength I had, and heaved myself upwards, opening my eyes, ready to fight off the beast again, if it were to attack.

To embarrassment, there I was, in the middle of my room, with my quilt still on me, hair in a mess, in a fighting Taekwando stance. And there my mum was, on my bed, looking at me with the most puzzled face ever.

Both she and I couldn't help but burst out laughing at the stupidity and awkwardness.

Just as I was about to plop back onto the floor (She sleeps with me, on my bed, so I take the floor), my mum shoves a box she proudly names: Her "Box Of Nonsense. But there's still Box 2 and Box 3". I stare sleepily, but in amazement as I took everything out of the box. There were buttons, papier mache, clips, foam, coloured paper, ribbons, googly eyes, scissors, pom poms, things that I didn't see before, nor heard before.

Just as I was about to fall back to sleep, she whipped out a long piece of black pipe cleaner. She wound and twined, and just as I was about to shut my eyes, she threw something hairy at my face.

I flicked it off of my face and looked to see what it was. It was a tarantula! Not a real one, but some creature that she made from her "Box Of Nonsense", with simply a piece of pipe cleaner and googly eyes. And made within a few minutes!

And it almost looks like the real one! Okay, a little exaggerated, but see if for yourself.

You must be wondering why my quilt looks so "naked". Well, I took the quilt cover off, because my dog loves sleeping on it, and my quilt always runs in the cover, having it mispositioned all over the place. And so i took it off, and have been sleeping like that ever since.

Anyway, when I asked my mum how she thought of the spider, and how to make it, all she said was "I don't know, it just popped into my head!"

Hahaha.

Do your parents, at least one, behave like how my mum does?

By the way, because of the White Tiger Attack at the zoo, my job's postponed till Wednesday!! :(

The Bs; Blogskins and Birthdays

*This post was supposed to be dated on the 16th November. But I was too busy to blog about and so it was saved in my Drafts.

If you have been to my blog recently, you'd realized that I have been changing my blogskin every few hours. Well, I love searching for blogskins and I must say, This Site (Click Me!) does have many talented designers. A couple of my favourites are designers like Solistice (Click Me!), Fedora_girl(Click Me!), Li0nheart (Click Me!) and SPLASH! (Click Me!) Of course, there are others, with pretty good skins as well.

What I like about the designers is that they use really vibrant colours to catch the attention of noobs, like me as well as genius bloggers. There were many designs which I liked A LOT, but I didn't choose them, instead, I chose this skin, which I liked alot too, but not as much as the others. And the only reason why I rejected the others, hesistantly, was because, of the size left for the posts.

I believe that an online journal, where people share their thoughts, knowlege and opinions, should have the widest space for their posts. This not only enables readers to really focus on theirs posts, but also enables them to see them clearly, without the small fonts.

I definitely would not want my readers to squint just to see my posts, nor be blinded by the neon colours of the fonts.

That was why I kept changing my blogskin, in search for something better, with bigger space for my posts, and so I settled on this. Not bad a design, and definitely enough space for my posts.

Anyway, enough about my blogskin, let's move on to the next B; Birthdays.

Today happens to be a special day for three people. They are none other than Wei Cheow, Ms Lim Hui Qi and my Dad. What is so special about today, for them, is that today happens to be their birthday!

To Wong Wei Cheow (if you happen to read this) :

A great friend for four years, so much that we treat each other more like brothers than friends. You are really a great guy, so don't let the daily obstacles in Life pull you down. I am sure you will be a very successful man, with many accomplishments.

Count your Life by the smiles, not the tears
Count your age by the Friends, not the years.

Good luck, and may you succeed in your future endeavours!!

To Ms Lim Hui Qi ( If you happen to read this) :

Despite only knowing you for two years, you have totally gotten my full respect. I do not have a religion, but I believe that there is God. And I think that God gave the world a gift when you were born; a person who loves and cares, who sees a person's needs and fills it, who encourages and lifts people up, who spends energy on others rather than herself, who touches each life she enters.

You may think that your actions are little. But it's the little actions that you do, that makes a difference in the world. May the love you shower on us, be returned to you multiplied!

Au Revoir

Once the invigilator asked us to put down our pen and hand up our paper, it seemed as though a huge load was lifted off my shoulders.

Though we had no idea on what to do immediately after our papers, my friends and I were pretty glad that the GCE 'O' level Examinations are finally over for us.

We heaved huge sighs of relief and sadness as we walked past the familiar buildings one last time. That moment was like a nostalgia for our school days, for the fun, sad, boring, angry and memorable times we had and shared.

I don't usually put names of teachers in this blog, for fear of being hunted down by them. Hahah. But today's post is entirely dedicated to them, and the non-teaching staffs, including the vendors. Because it's not only the teachers who teach us, but the
other working adults there as well, who teach us things that textbooks do not teach. Let's just term all of them at Teachers.

Dear Teachers,

I would really love to thank you for all the time, effort and concern you put in and had for us. What I love about the teachers in this school, is that they not only educate us for the sake of our major examinations, but also for the sake of our well-being. All of you taught stuff that books did not have, and that was to be a good, smart, and responsible person. You taught us things like Respect, Independence, Resilience, Responsibility and even enabled us to built our self esteem as well as place ourselves as Winners In Life. You taught us how to make quick yet responsible decisions in Life, as well as motivated us to study (thanks to Mrs Kok for the "I'm Gifted So Are You" workshop conducted by Adam Khoo and his colleagues). Despite having your schedule packed with workload and family, many teachers gave up their time for us, and came forth to help the graduating students in every way possible. They even wished us well (on the Apple Tree). It was really touching to see these teachers give their all for us, despite not being related to us at all. I guess our school really proved that we are ONE BIG FAMILY after all.

Thank you so much for the all the patience, guidance, respect, perseverance and definitely the willingness to educate us and pass on all your knowledge to us.

All this have indeed inspired me to take on similar roles as you. I still do think that the students of the school aren't the
WRStars. I think the staffs deserve this title more than we students do!

Goodbye Teachers, Goodbye Staffs, Goodbye Friends, Goodbye School!

Bite Me

After reading today's New Paper, I'm a tad bit nervous to start work at the zoo. I found out that today's news was not only published in Singapore, but also other parts of the world like India and the USA.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, go grab the New Paper or Click Here, Here and Here.

The New Paper also revealed other incidents that happened in the zoo, involving Ah Meng our famous orang utan, hippos, elephants and chimps.

My mum's worried, and she's asking me to reconsider my job, for fear of something bad might happen to me.

But all the more, I'm even more excited to be up front, face-to-face with theses dangerous, it gives me a sort of adrenaline rush.

Shame

Parents are the most sacred people in our lives. They gave us Life, bringing us into this mystical world of wonders. They gave us love, care and concern when we needed them most. They sheltered us and showered us with clothes and a pampered life with money. They were the first to fit us into clothes, guide us in our first steps in Life, and definitely the first to change our diapers.

We have disappointed them in many ways.

As babies:
From the embarrassment of screaming and crying in the buses and MRTs, to the shitting and puking at the most inconvenient times. From the nights we made them stay awake just because we needed milk or a change in diapers, to the times where we made them worry that they might lose us in shopping malls.

As adolescence:
From the times we threw tantrums at them, to the time where we demanded money from them to buy stuff that friends thought were "cool". From the rebellious act of defiance, to the stupid stuff we did with our friends just because it looked "cool". From the hurtful words we said about them, to the kind words we never said about them.

Yet all this while, despite our humiliating behaviour, they chose to stick by us, never giving up on us. True, sometimes they may say harsh words to us, but it's basically because we did something stupid. You may roll your eyes and stuff, but parents do do things for our own good. Even if they did some bad things, people do make mistakes isn't it? What about all the times you did stupid things to them?

And so I find it really disheartening to see youths nowadays still being really rude to their parents.

I have seen incidents where youths actually yell at their parents in the MRT, for no apparent reasons. Some wal real fast or real slow, leaving their parents infront or behind of them. Some talk really rudely to their parents, ending conversations in brief "yes" and "no". Some idiots even chose to ignore their parents.

I even have friends who are really afraid to be seen when they are with their families, or parents. It's funny seeing them hide, or try some way or another to avoid your gaze. Some even pretend to not see you at all.

I'm really curious, what's so embarresing about going out with parents or your family? I love going out with mine. I love how people stare with questions in their head, wondering how come my family has people of different skin colour and looks. I love spending time with my family because we not only get along by the food we like, but we're so lame, that it's impossible not to click. Furthermore, our parents are always updated on our daily lives, and so we could simply seat down with them, and talk about our Life.

If youths are treating their parents so badly because of how their parents dress, then I'd say that's bullshit. You don't expect your mum to go around wearing horrible skimpy looking hot pants, with bare backs tees, bling bling flip flops and tote backs right? I mean I'm not saying parents aren't allowed to wear all these, but it's basically only right for them to wear clothes of their age, for decency sake. Besides, clothes worn by youths nowadays are getting lesser and lesser, thinner and thinner, I wouldn't be surprised if a new trend comes out for youths to start wearing bra and panties, walking around Orchard Road.

If you're so smart to judge your parents based on their clothes, then why not spend your money to buy clothes you think is nice for them? Their age, but with the killer youth deisgns. Not a bad idea isn't it?

Stop hating your parents and start loving them, because they loved you when no one else did.

Live Your Life

Have you ever been in a situation where you didn't want to lie, yet couldn't tell the truth?

Have you ever been in a situation where you said something but never meant it?

Have you ever been in a situation where you were so afraid of what others thought about you that you had to lie, in order to be noticed?

Have you ever tried being noticed or successful by doing something that you knew was wrong?

Have you ever feared whether others hated you?

Have you ever had doubts in yourself?

I admit that I agree to some of the things mentioned above. I did things, many stupid things just because I was bored, or because my friends did them.

I used to doubt myself and was worried about what others thought about me. I tried my best to change myself, to please the others. But I failed to do one thing, the very one thing that means the most to us; to please myself with who I was. I did not like who I was, and so I slowly pulled away from them, and be who I wanted myself to be.

The past few years, especially in Secondary School, had put me in many situations where I was in a dilemma, to whether or not lie, or tell the truth. Sometimes I chose to lie, sometimes I told the truth. Both ways, I gained and lost friends. But I was sick of it.

Some people think that lying is the greatest sin of all, and that liars, are not good enough to have friends. Well, I'd say that's just some made up crap. Everyone lies. I lie not because I want to, or because I did something bad. But it's because of protecting someone or something. But again, I'm sick of it all.

That is why, I am sort of glad to leave secondary school life, leaving all the bad incidents behind. And just living my Life.

Slipknot

I was first introduced to Heavy Metal bands by my brothers. And the first band that I loved was not Lordi (it was many years later after) but Slipknot.

SLIPKNOT Pictures, Images and Photos

Facts from Wikipedia.org:

Slipknot is an American heavy metal band from Des Moines, Iowa. Slipknot consists of nine members, the current band members are Sid Wilson, Joey Jordison, Paul Gray, Chris Fehn, Jim Root, Craig Jones, Shawn Crahan, Mick Thomson, and Corey Taylor. The band's line-up has remained unchanged since 1999. Each member of the band wears a unique mask.

Slipknot formed in 1995 and underwent several line-up changes following the independent release of Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. in 1996. Their self-titled debut studio album was released in 1999 and was followed by Iowa in 2001 and Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) in 2004. On August 25, 2008, the band returned to release their fourth studio album, All Hope Is Gone, which debuted at the top spot on the Billboard 200 charts. The band has released three DVDs including 2002's Disasterpieces, which was certified quadruple-platinum in the United States

I first fell in love with them at the age of 8. Call me weird, but I really liked the way they actually created their songs and music video. I was so drawn to their music video.

And their masks are simply amazing. Very artistic, and very much like The Undertaker and Kane in WWE, back in WWF when they still had their masks on. Only Slipknot is way much better. Besides, they always have new masks, so there's no real preference to which mask I like. I just like how the group stands out together, being unique both as a individual, and as a band.

Sometimes, they remind me of the movie SAW, with the mini bicycle and all.

My favourite song is "Wait and Bleed".

I once presented "Wait and Bleed" both song and lyrics to my class back when I was in Secondary Two. It was for show-and -tell. Boy, my teacher was so pissed that he made my group redo the presentation, and we ended up presenting yet again, but with some stupid book report.

Some of the other songs which I like:

Before I forget

Psychosicial

Dead Memories

Duality

The Nameless

The most "happening" music video: Left Behind

Favourite Music Video of all time: Spit It Out

Questions that people can't answer

While waiting for my mum to finish up her haircut, I went to Bugis Junction's Kinokuniya to complete on the book "Ways to live forever" by Sally Nicholls.

And so, the idea from today's post is from that book.

Questions that people can't answer.

They are basically questions bottled up in me, that people have not answered yet.

  • Have you ever wondered how it would feel when you're dead?
  • How do you know that you are dead?
  • Why are we here on Earth?
  • What is life about?
  • If God treats humans as His kids, then why see them suffer with diseases and war? Is it a punishment?
  • How would you know if a ghost is haunting you if you can't see it. Even if you can see it, how do you know that it is a ghost?
  • Why do scientists create diseases only to cure them later?
  • Why does the hand on the clock only move clockwise?
  • Clouds are made of water vapour. So why do they not evaporate or condense?
  • Where do emotions come from?
  • How come the bases Adenine, thymine, Guanine and Cytosine in DNA always are able to find its pair so perfectly. Do they not mix up with foreign particles?
  • Why should we believe the things that are told to us today?
  • If the Big Bang created Universe, then where did Big Bang take place?
  • How long before science or any other religion, can find the answers to all our questions?
  • What are numbers? Really, what is a two? Or three?
  • Why are humans more superior than the other animals? Is it because we can speak and walk on two legs?
  • Why is sleep a sleep? What happens when we sleep? Does our mind do things on its own when we're asleep?
  • What are dreams? How are they formed?
  • Why is the hair on our body different from the ones on our head and pubes?

I think that is all for now. My mind is filled with so many questions that it's starting to become confusing.

Well, till then.

Racist Issues

When Barack Obama won the title as America's President, everyone from all over the world were pleased. Many of us have been rooting for Obama even though we are not Americans.

Singapore especially, being a Cosmopolitan country, we welcome foreigners from all over the world, with arms wide open. However, having done a Debate on Gender bias in Singapore, I came to realization the true statistics of Gender Bias in Singapore.

But, Singapore does not only suffer from Gender Bias, but also being bias in terms of Race( I wouldn't want to term it as Racism). That was why I found the article found in the papers the day after Obama won, an article asking if Singapore is ready for a non-Chinese PM.

Reading through the article and "debating" it with myself actually made me come to a conclusion that Singapore is not ready.

And one point that proves it all is whenever you job hunt. I wouldn't want to discriminate the specific store, but this one Popular Bookstore had really bad service. When my friends and I, clearly at first look, are non-Chinese, applied for the job, the manager was really rude to us, saying that not all of us will get the job and really seemed disgruntled when she tore the application papers for us.

Well, at first I thought she was having a bad day, but as I filled up the form, I looked around as many others applied for the job. Shockingly enough, she was happily tearing the forms for them, rattling away in Mandarin.

And after every Chinese applicant completed and gave her the form, she would talk to them for a pretty long time. And when my friends did the same to her, she looked at us in disdain, took our paper, not even looking at it, and said "Notice a weeks time", and she looked away.

Well, this is the first Bias treatment that I have received so far, but there are many jobs that, when you apply, always seek for people who can speak in English and Mandarin. I mean, I have no problems, despite not really being good in Mandarin. But it made me stop to ponder, if every one's looking for people who speaks English and Mandarin only, then where would the non-Chinese find a job?

Isn't this the same scenario as in Sri Lanka, where back in I-Don't-know-what-year, the Tamils were only given three years to learn Sinhala or be dismissed. The non-Chinese may not face the exaggerated time limit nor get dismissed, but is Singapore expecting the non-Chinese to pick up that language in order to get a stable job?

I think that Singapore should really cherish its people, and stop inviting foreigners over. It's true that they raise the competitive level for all jobs, but they are literally chasing away Singaporeans. Singaporeans also face limited jobs now. The newly built IRs have 60,000 jobs but only 10,000 are for Singaporeans. The rest? For the foreigners.

Even at the zoo, people are getting retrenched. The tram guides for example, are mostly being replaced with
Filipinos.

With the economic meltdown, more people are jobless.
So what is Singapore to do, if all of its people turn their backs on her?

And if Singapore is really ready for a non-Chinese PM, I would LOVE to run for it! hahah

Lesson Learnt

Today's tormenting job hunt taught me a very valuable lesson; to never go for an interview in your uniform! It will give the employers an impression that you seem to be very young, inexperience and not presentable!

But putting all bad stuff aside,
I GOT A JOB AS A SHOW PRESENTER IN THE ZOO!

I think it will be a tiring but very good and enjoyable experience for me!

True Act of Singaporeans

I went out again yesterday, took the MRT, and returned home feeling rather uncomfortable.

The MRT ride to and fro made me see the true colours of Singaporeans, or at least, the people living in Singapore. It made me question whether or not Singa the courtesy Mascot is doing his job.

The journey from home was rather uncomfortable. The train was not at crowded as it used to be and everyone had a place to sit. And there I was, trying to sleep when I was disturbed by the most obscene thing ever. Apparently, I was seated at the corner seats, and there was this guy who was leaning against the glass. What was disturbing was the action of constantly squishing and moving his butt up and down, against the glass, and I had the full view of it! The mere sight of it wrecked my hunger for sleep, and so I stayed awake, by zombie- ly reading my Reader's Digest.

The journey back home wasn't that great either. There I was, in the overly packed train, seeing teenagers, around my age, blocking the entrances of the doors by literally sitting by them. I used to sit by doors to, but I always say at the doors that rarely opened, and if they did, I always got up a stop before they opened.

To make matters worst, there was a pregnant lady on board, with a pram, and NO ONE actually gave up their sits for her! On one of the stops, the pram nearly toppled and luckily there was another elderly guy who gave up his seat to save it. What a great country, elderly giving up seats for the pregnant/other elderly.

This has not been the first time where I saw elderly giving up seats for others. In fact, there have been other incidents whereby youths, or young adults actually pretended to fall asleep so that they "did not see" the others who need it more.

There have also been incidents where an elderly gave up his seat for someone, and another person actually rushed and sat on the seat!

And I hate it whenever there are couples on board. It's either they start hugging and do all the mushy mushy stuff, or the girl would lean against the pole, with the guy's hand on her waist or something, totally preventing others from holding onto the pole to prevent themselves from falling.

I wonder if Singapore is really proud of its people. I just hope the foreigners that come to Singapore don't learn from us, and do the same thing to others.

By the way,
OBAMA WON! YAY!

First Time

*Updated

LONG POST AHEAD.

Today had been a day of many firsts; First Day after the major papers of 'O' Levels, First Time waking up so early (7.30am) on a non-schooling day, First Time taking the train to Orchard in the morning and alone, First Time visiting the agency, First Time eating at MacDonalds in Lucky Plaza alone, First Time walking aimlessly around Orchard Road alone.

But it was all worth while. As I got to see many things that I never knew existed, or had never had the chance to stop and look at, a second longer. This gave me the privilege to appreciate the things around me more.

I never really liked cameras nor taking taking photographs because I feel that it isn't all natural. I believe that the eyes and skin are the best cameras anyone could get because they not only let you see but feel the magnificence of things.

Anyway, while walking from the MRT station to Takashimaya, I had the chance to admire vibrant coloured candies (Christmas ornaments) that dangled from the trees by the street. They were sparkly and dazzling, I am sure they would be even more mesmerizing at night. Well, it was day time, morning in fact, and so all the shops by Orchard were still close. And so, I headed to MacDonalds to have my breakfast, alone.

It was odd sitting by myself as I did not have anyone to talk to, but this gave me an opportunity to look around me, more. I observed how some people ate, how they walked and talked, basically everything that caught my eyes. Other people, I actually enjoyed watching the Tv advertisements scrolling on-screen.

One of them in fact, really drew my attention, thus I fell in love with the advertisement. I think, that this is by far the most interesting advertisement that advertises one's country.

Amazing Thailand

After breakfast, I headed to the agency which was quite quick and swift. After which, I then headed to my favourite bookstore, Kinokuniya. The mere thought of being surrounded by so many books made me jump in joy inside.

It was breath-taking as I scanned through the wide variety of books. I was dazzled by the presence of so many books, that was accompanied by the warmth of the lighting that caressed everyone with love. I was delighted and looked through some books, I even read some and got the time and chance to imagine myself in the stories. I was also my first time seeing or rather reading about the tales of Eragon unfolding itself in the books.

Photobucket

Photobucket

I passed by rows after rows of books that simply enlightened me. And while being at Kinokuniya, I happened to chance upon a Great book that made me fall in love with it, just at the first page. It is titled 'Ways to live forever' by Sally Nicholls. It is about a little boy who wrote an entire book about his life. Just like us, he had dreams, aspirations and stories of his life. But what sets him apart from us, is that this boy is dying, from leukemia.

I read a few chapters of the book, and did not want to "read for free", and so I set it back. And wandered farther in Kinokuniya.

I managed to get myself stuck in the Stationery section where I was literally like a kid jumping in joy. There were so many stationery that I could not help but squeal in excitement.

There were so many types of pens

Photobucket

so many designs of writing paper (decorated)

Photobucket

so many designs of perforators

Photobucket

so many colours of glitter glues

Photobucket

Photobucket

so many cute small erasers (some even looked like real Sushi!)

so many cute stickers (with tiny beads and pictures in them)

there were even adorable flash cards

and pencil cases. Oh yah, there was even a

BLING BLING PEN!

Photobucket

Just being able to be at the stationery section made me all warm and fuzzy inside. I wanted to stay longer, but I wanted to leave as well. And so, I chose latter, and left. I went to..... The Toys Department Store!

I practically lost myself in the world of toys. I touched and hugged every soft toy I could see. I even had the chance to play the Spider-Man T.V game And of course, a MUST PLAY everywhere I go, Etch-a-sketch!

I watched every advertisement on play. For this Christmas, they're actually bringing BLO PENS. I used to have a set of those, and I like them pretty much. However, the ink ran dry and I had to throw them away.

There was a section of hello kitty, and immediately, I thought of Yap Jia Min. hahah.

I spent most of my time at three sections. The first one was the Crayola section. I think they have the most creative and innovative variety in coloring kits! There's washable markers, erasable colour pencils, and mess-free crayons!

I felt like a small kid again.

The second was at the PlayDoh section. PlayDoh have one of the most awesome gadgets in the world. Just by using plasticine, one can make things like Ice Cream (Magic Swirl Ice Cream Shoppe) as well as creative crafts (Super Craft Caddy).

There is also a gadget from 'Girls Gourmet' that actually bakes cup cakes. It was pretty neat, but what drew my attention the most was this advertisement from the last section, of a Japanese toy. I think Causeway's Action City has the same toy, the pea pod thing with the guy going insane by pressing and popping the peas? What is that eh? I was curious and so I joined the kids there as we pressed the pea pods, trying to see what would happen. But nothing did happen.

Frustrated but contented with my journey, i left TakaShimaya and headed to Wisma Atria. I first headed to my favourite shop, Flesh Imp, but didn't stay long as there were sales assistants. hahah. I then practically walked around aimlessly throughout the whole of Wisma Atria.

I like how BeBe, Rough Jeansmith and TopShop have the very "welcoming" factor towards their shop. There were also cute items selling outside of Flesh Imp.

I walked around till it was time to leave, for good.

I took the train and headed back to near Home where I met up with Wan Teng, Shera and Aainaa for our Movie date!

It's another long story from there, so I'll continue some other time!
