In today's art classroom

As an art trainer, I get numerous opportunities to visit various kindergartens, primary and secondary schools. I teach visual arts, and I provide my children with learning experiences – primarily to explore, to experiment, to create, to destroy, to reflect and conclude. It is a fun job, but a little part of me dies every single time. Why?

“I don’t know how to do. I scared wrong”. Or “I don’t want to do, later my hands dirty”.

For the 22 years in my life, I have never been to the toilet as often as some of these kids have, in one lesson. I am not kidding. I have spent more time responding (more like rejecting) to requests for them to go to the toilet to wash their hands, than actually creating something in class.

The disgust on their face when a little bit of paint gets onto their fingers. The frustration they feel when things get stuck to their sticky fingers while gluing their artwork. Worst, when they make an irreversible mistake on their work. The devastating look on their face makes me wonder at times, if they see me as the devil who is out to ruin their lives. However, I do get my fair share of blames from ‘The blame game’ – “teacher I told you I cannot do it, you ask me to try. See what happens. Now it is ruined”.

True enough, I did ask them to try, but what I expected in the end of a failed attempt was for them to figure a way out, or experiment to see if another method works, but they give up. They simply give up.

It puzzles me to know that these beautiful intellectual beings are afraid to try something new, or try something different. They are just… Afraid.

It irks me even more to know that the only texture they are willing to touch or lay their finger on, is the screen of their phone or Ipad. What a waste.

Don’t get me wrong. Not every child is like that, and I did not say that it is wrong to be a fastest fingers first. You can be a genius with technology, but your ziggity zag fingers that got your through Temple Run, will not get you through a Visual Arts lesson, especially when you’re supposed to create with your hands - on paper, on batik, with wires, clay, paint, etc.

I am not the ‘cleanest dish in the sink’ either; I am not the finest example in the early childhood or education industry, so I will not cite famous quotations from great philosophers on what is good or bad for kids. However, what I do know is that if I were to ever take care of kids, or be blessed with kids of my own, I will make sure that these kids get to feel what it is like to have gooey, sticky, messy, muddy, or to what others deem as “gross” things on their hands, feet, body, and heck even their faces.

There will be days where they will scavenge for their little toy soldiers that are trapped in huge ice blocks, and there will be days were they will pretend to have crime scenes and chalk silhouettes outside. They will have coloured bomb baths, after wriggling their feet in mud puddles, or after running across oobleck. They will read books about plants, and they might even pick up gardening after that. They’ll meet insects that help their plants, and they’ll keep pet caterpillars and butterflies. They’ll have puppet shows on rainy days with their felt and paper mache-made puppets, or they could play with shadows and lights when there is a storm.

They will explore, experiment, present, create and destroy. Most importantly, they will have fun.

Technology? Oh they will get to go on the web. That is, when they are fine tuning their ‘blueprints’ so that we can make cardboard go-karts to race round the park.

Now who’s with me?

More Hilarious Videos!

Taken from the description: "A day in the life of a typical working class Singaporean named Terry reveals to us many Singaporean characteristics that we do not pay much attention to. This film shows how little things can bring out the "singaporean-ness" in us, and gives us a good reason to be proud of our country. ".

Just be wary of who the person might actually be, the next time you plan on "jio-ing"/ whistling at someone.

What the actor and actress in Titanic, actually wanted to say. In hokkien!

This video is a parody of Wonder Girl's 'Nobody'. Done by Mr Brown and gang, they comeback with hilarious lyrics (to the tune of Nobody) based on the recent H1Ni pandemic.

And what good way to end this post other than to show you my favourite video? Pokemon used to be one of my favourite cartoons but I soon got confused over the many versions of it.

And this my friends, is an awesome video of the Pokemon theme song.

Enjoy!

Shoot down the Stars, for all we need is Peace

Earth Hour actually allowed me to divide my neighbourhood into two groups. One was '
People who care about Earth' and the other was 'People who couldn't even be bothered to lift their finger to turn off the light switches'.

Truth to be told, my neighbourhood fell in the
latter. And I sure am disappointed.

I actually had a picture in mind.

Maybe it was too much, but I thought that it would be cool if one's neighbourhood could have the existance of an exhilarating yet peaceful ambience.

But boy, was my neighbourhood far from the word 'Darkness'! Neighbours of mine were seen to have all their lights switched on, some even playing DVDs, computer games and even karaoke.

Okay, so maybe my neighbours don't bother about Earth Hour. Let's check out the neighbourhood.

The thought of seeing the HDB flats with their lights out was soon replaced by the actual sight that there were less than 10 flats with their lights switched off! And I bet that out of these 10 flats, maybe 7 or 8 of them had families that weren't at home, so the lights were switched off.

If I were an organisation that was promoting Earth Hour, I would have switched off all the corridor lights (and allow burglars to carry out their heist), put all the channels on TV on test screen.

Or better yet, make them 'suffer' like how we students did back in school, during Total Defence Day. The water supply was switched off (can you imagine how unhygienic it was with no water to wash up after using the toilet? Oh, and I remember that there was this one time in my Primary School, this kid took a big dump in the toilet and it couldn't be flushed down! The horror...), so were the fans and lights.

It's actually not torturous, for the fact that it is only for an hour.

It can't be helped because if it is a matter which is not compulsory, almost (Read: ALMOST) everyone would not even be bothered about it.

And to those numbskulls who weren't bothered about Earth Hour, see what Global Warming is doing to the polar bears!

"Potentially fatal to the polar bear, global warming has already left its mark on the species with smaller, less robust bears that are increasingly showing cannibalistic tendencies."

"The primary observation is that as the sea ice shrinks away, so are the polar bears -- they're not growing as big as they used to."

"The melting ice means not only shorter hunting seasons, but it also means the bears, who number some 20,000 to 25,000 worldwide, have to cross greater distances to reach their icy hunting grounds.

This has led to a deterioration of the bears' health, impacting their reproductive capacities and the cubs' chances of survival, experts warned."

" "We knew of polar bears killing and eating other polar bears," Steven Amstrup, a research wildlife biologist with the US Geological Survey, told AFP.

"But the difference was that this time the polar bears were clearly deliberately hunting other bears, attacking for example females in their denning area" in northern Alaska, he said.

"We assume that it was linked to nutritional stress."

Faced with the growing uncertainty concerning the ice, pregnant polar bears are increasingly denning on land, researchers have noticed."

I think that if no fast actions are taken to save these Polar Bears, they are bound to be the next Do Do Birds.

Earth Hour

Today, we are given the opportunity to take control of our Future. Regardless of age, race, nationality or background, we get to vote, and to let our voices be heard.

For just one hour, we can make a whole lot of difference, and this would show how much we care for the people around us, the animals living with us, and most importantly, how much we care about Earth, the place we call HOME.

The fate of our Future lies in our hands and ours only.

In a modernized world like ours, one would think of not how much we are helping Earth, but how much we can do in that one hour. Essays could be completed in that hour, you could watch your favourite television series on one hour and even complete a level in your favourite computer game.

But is it all worth it?

Can we not care about ourselves for a moment? And care for others?

There are droughts in places that used to have water in abundance;

The sea level rises, obstructing paths for both pedestrians and vehicles.

"Several times each year the regular lunar cycle of tides, riding on the ever higher mean sea level, brings the Pacific sloshing over onto roads and into neighborhoods. In the center of the larger islands the sea floods out of old barrow pits and even squirts up out of the coral bedrock. Puddles bubble up that eventually cover part of the airport on the main island of Funafuti and inundate homes that are not along the ocean."

Even erosion occurs.

And all this is caused by us, humans. And who suffers? Not only us humans, but every single living creature on Earth. Why should they suffer the impact of Global Warming when we humans are the ones to be blamed?

Polar Bears are one of the animals that are on the 'Endangered' list. One of the main reason for this is because of Global Warming.

If you have studied Geography, you would know that Global Warming raises the average temperature of Earth or in other words, increasing the global temperature. This, causes the sea levels to rise(because by raising the global temperature, it causes the polar caps to melt. Thus, raising the sea level.), and would without a doubt, change the pattern of precipitation all over the world.

What has it got to do with animals like the Polar Bears? Well, with the rise in sea level, is causes the polar to swim twice the distance they usually swim in order to find food. Many die due to over-exhaustion from the hunting.

And there you have it. Innocent animals die because of us.

So what to do? Vote Earth.

And look at the beauty of our hearts combines in saving our Future.

I am Voting Earth, are you?

Day Out

2nd February was my mother's birthday. We didn't really celebrate it on that day. Instead, we did it on the 1st because my brother had to report back to camp. I must say, that it is really tough doing things behind my mum's back. She's always up and about, and really vigilant. The slightest move can let her know what'll we're up to.

So it was three in the afternoon and I told her to take a nap. I could see her eyes questioning mine, but she slept anyway. Then, it was my task to get the cake, cook the meals and make everything PERFECT. I marinated the meat and left it to soak up the flavour. Then I went to get my mum's cake.

Everything was last minute because none of my brothers told me anything until on that day itself. And I had to do everything. Oh well.

Back to the story..

So I headed to the shop and couldn't find any Dark Forest Cake (my mum's fave). There were only chocolate cakes and tiramisu, and their excuse was because it was Chinese New Year. Stupid or what.

My mum doesn't like chocolate. And we've been eating tiramisu ice-cream for the past few days. So I called my brothers as I paced up and down in the shop. The shop keeper must've thought that I was some kind of amateur thief who panicked at the last minute. Hahah.

Both of them said the same thing "Aiyah, take anything lah". It was so easy for them to say it, I wish I was the one saying it. So I bought a vanilla fruit cake. It was the best I could find. Besides, it isn't too sweet for my diabetic mum.

Made my way home, and my intelligent brother did not stall time for me. I entered my home with a cake in my hands, with my mum greeting me in the kitchen.

Then I found out that she doesn't really like vanilla cakes because of the strong essence. Another bummer.

And the worst of all, she was cooking the meat which I marinated! When I shoo-ed her away, she said "this is my kitchen, why can't I stay here". She was right. It is HER kitchen, and so I stood alongside her, cooking the meal that was meant for her.

We cut the cake before my brother left, and then I found out that these sort of cakes were meant for old people, because it wasn't sweet. So I said that I cared for her, since she had Diabetes. And she actually agreed to my statement.

Fast forward to the next day...

I don't like the idea of not getting gifts for someone's birthday. And being my mum, she always denies wanting anything. And she always keepsour gifts for her because when asked she'll say "sayang mah. Use already then no more how?". Ya lah, keep until evaporate/spoil/cannot use already lah, then more sayang right.

So instead of buying things for her, I brought her out, my treat! She didn't want anything fancy, and letting her pick the place was the worst idea ever. Because instead of relaxing herself at some Spa, or doing shopping spree, my mum chose the library. So on her birthday, she spend the entire day at the library. I actually had a good time there too, because I managed to get back to my hobby of reading books.

Nothing much happened, just that I saw fellow schoolmates; Beverly, Chun Kiat and Mei Yin.

Skipping to the next day...

I decided to bring her out again, this time my choice. I chose IKEA/Giant, since they were side by side. And she loves Giant, and I love IKEA. But then she argued that it was far, and waste of time because the only thing we would be doing was drooling over things we wanted. So I told her to pick another place and we settled on IMM.

This was where something interesting began.

We bought our meals, and to our horror, could not really enjoy it because the inconsiderate people were dragging/lifting/pushing their chairs really noisily. I wonder if people living in that area were taught to do it noisily because everyone there seemed to be doing it, and none of them seemed to be bothered by it, except my mum and I. It was an unpleasant meal, but we decided to settle for dessert as well.

Apparently, it wasn't my lucky day. The dessert stall was manned by China workers (I think so, from hearing their accent). Anyway, the lady that was serving me was pissed that someone was spreading rumours about her. And her colleagues and her were arguing over something. (It was all in Mandarin and I am glad that I managed to understand some of it, unfortunately not all.) There were three of them, including the girl serving me. They argued LOUDLY about 20 feet apart each other. And the girl serving me was pissed and she was going on and on loudly. Everyone were looking at me, and her. And I was disappointed at how professional they were. I stood there for about 5 minutes while she went on and on, even in-between scoops of my durian ice kachang.

Then suddenly, one of the colleague said something that pulled the trigger. The girl that served me was about to burst. She spoke so loudly, and even stormed furiously towards them. It was really loud, the arguments, you know how high pitch and fast they can go. Secretly, my mum and I were waiting for some "action" to happen.

wrestling Pictures, Images and Photos

But sadly, one of the In-Charge stepped in to stop the whole commotion. And that was it.

But it is not my first time seeing unprofessional foreigners doing things like this. There was once when I was in the train and a lady (whom I think is also from China, from the way she spoke and looked) who was wearing a dress, actually sat with her legs up in the train! It was really disgusting because her private and panty could be seen. It was a total "Squatting position". Imagine that. Fortunately, it was the last train, and there wasn't much people in the train.

I'm not saying that I dislike foreigners or anything. But I wonder if Singaporeans would do the same too. I doubt so.

Racist Issues

When Barack Obama won the title as America's President, everyone from all over the world were pleased. Many of us have been rooting for Obama even though we are not Americans.

Singapore especially, being a Cosmopolitan country, we welcome foreigners from all over the world, with arms wide open. However, having done a Debate on Gender bias in Singapore, I came to realization the true statistics of Gender Bias in Singapore.

But, Singapore does not only suffer from Gender Bias, but also being bias in terms of Race( I wouldn't want to term it as Racism). That was why I found the article found in the papers the day after Obama won, an article asking if Singapore is ready for a non-Chinese PM.

Reading through the article and "debating" it with myself actually made me come to a conclusion that Singapore is not ready.

And one point that proves it all is whenever you job hunt. I wouldn't want to discriminate the specific store, but this one Popular Bookstore had really bad service. When my friends and I, clearly at first look, are non-Chinese, applied for the job, the manager was really rude to us, saying that not all of us will get the job and really seemed disgruntled when she tore the application papers for us.

Well, at first I thought she was having a bad day, but as I filled up the form, I looked around as many others applied for the job. Shockingly enough, she was happily tearing the forms for them, rattling away in Mandarin.

And after every Chinese applicant completed and gave her the form, she would talk to them for a pretty long time. And when my friends did the same to her, she looked at us in disdain, took our paper, not even looking at it, and said "Notice a weeks time", and she looked away.

Well, this is the first Bias treatment that I have received so far, but there are many jobs that, when you apply, always seek for people who can speak in English and Mandarin. I mean, I have no problems, despite not really being good in Mandarin. But it made me stop to ponder, if every one's looking for people who speaks English and Mandarin only, then where would the non-Chinese find a job?

Isn't this the same scenario as in Sri Lanka, where back in I-Don't-know-what-year, the Tamils were only given three years to learn Sinhala or be dismissed. The non-Chinese may not face the exaggerated time limit nor get dismissed, but is Singapore expecting the non-Chinese to pick up that language in order to get a stable job?

I think that Singapore should really cherish its people, and stop inviting foreigners over. It's true that they raise the competitive level for all jobs, but they are literally chasing away Singaporeans. Singaporeans also face limited jobs now. The newly built IRs have 60,000 jobs but only 10,000 are for Singaporeans. The rest? For the foreigners.

Even at the zoo, people are getting retrenched. The tram guides for example, are mostly being replaced with
Filipinos.

With the economic meltdown, more people are jobless.
So what is Singapore to do, if all of its people turn their backs on her?

And if Singapore is really ready for a non-Chinese PM, I would LOVE to run for it! hahah

Dawn Yang, Xiaxue, Shi Ming Yi = Singapore!

First, it was the virtual war between two famous bloggers, Dawn Yang and Xiaxue.

This was where Xiaxue made clear statements of the displeasure of being constantly compared to Dawn Yang. She also gave her impression of Dawn and mentioned that she did not really like her.

This of course, caused a stir in the blogosphere, where visitors moved back and forth from Xiaxue's blog, to Dawn Yang's blog.

Soon after, the very displeased Dawn Yang, filed a lawsuit against Xiaxue.

Click

The commotion was such a hoo-haa that it appeared not only in straits times, but in the local chinese news papers as well.

Despite the commotion, Xiaxue continued her jovial blogging, and even mentioned in the Straits time that she was not going to apologize.

Obviously, Xiaxue had more supporters, and so many revealed Dawn's secret of going under the knife.

Soon, sites were found, containing the truth about Dawn Yang.

It was [xanga.com/Dawn_wayang] back then. But it got closed down, or rather, moved to here

Another site was also getting popular amongst bloggers, as if claimed and proved that Dawn Yang was involved in Plagiarism.

Click

Xiaxue then posted on her general thoughts of plagiarism, mentioning that it was "the lowest a blogger can hit".

This has not only caused a stir in the blogosphere, but to the public as well. Everyone's keeping an eye in people's blogs now.

Apart from the blogosphere, there is another ongoing commotion amongst the public to whether or not trust and continue donating to Ren Ci Hospital.

Remember a few months back, five Singapore dragon boat rowers died after drowning when their boat capsized?

I pity the families as I feel that the Singapore team should have enforced the importance of the life jackets. Nothing (such as rowing difficulty) should be as important than a life.

Money No Enough 2 Review

In my previous post, I mentioned that I was all beefed up for the Premier of "Money No Enough 2".

Photobucket

If you have not caught it, I recommend you take a day off, and bring your mom with you, to the movies!

I did not catch "Money No Enough", the first movie, but like they said, whether we missed out or not, the second movie will definitely not be a let down. And it indeed was not a let down!

Here's the synopsis:

Taken from "http://sg.movies.yahoo.com/Money+No+Enough+2/movie/14707/"

Following the success of "Money No Enough" (1998) ten years ago, which is undoubtedly Singapore's biggest box-office hit with an unsurpassed S$5.8 million, Jack Neo along with co-stars Mark Lee and Henry Thia are back in "Money No Enough 2".

I have always been a great fan of Jack Neo's movie because I feel that he represents the entire Singapore as ONE VOICE.

There are many Singaporeans out there who want to stand up for their own rights, "rebelling" against the policies made by the government. Shunning the "efforts" of the PAP to make Singapore a better place. Many fear the Government, thus supporting the PAP. But how many are truly satisfied with the efforts? Like mentioned in the movie, Singaporeans complain, complain, complain. Then when it becomes an issue, they avoid it, because it isn't their problem. And soon enough, when the issue settles down, everyone has to adapt to the changes.

True, Singapore is an independent country, and the people are great. But with the rapid change in the modernized world, Singapore is becoming more Money-minded, and fear for their face and money, than to literally aid in improving Singapore.

This movie speaks of the "silent" Singapore voices that were unable to make a change. It embarrasses us Singaporeans to sit and watch this movie in awe, feeling "why have I not done that?".

It also shows how we, the future generation, be it a working adult, or a youth, tend to neglect our parents. Although our parents tend to give that "don't worry about me, I'm fine. Anything lah.", we should never take it for granted that they are happy where they are. In this movie, apart from the ERP, PAP, it also shows how an elderly mom who suffers from Dementia, who took care of her children, gave up her Life, just because she witness how umwilling her children were in taking care of her, and splitting the money to pay her medical bills.

It's sad to see this happening in our country, one where we thought was safe and clean. But it's mainly because we're ignorant to what's going on INSIDE. I'm glad Jack Neo made the movies that he did.

I would give a standing ovation, if I could.

Jack Neo is like Singapore's very own Micheal Moore.

Not sure who he is?

Click

Click

He's the one man that America's after. The man, who slammed George W. Bush through his documentaries that actually revealed the truth behind September 11th and other shows. I got a glimpse of one of his movie "Sicko" and I am impressed.

Yeah, Jack Neo reminds me of him, Singapore Style. I just hope Singapore government does not ban his movies, because afterall, it's the TRUTH.

Anyway, enough words. I'll the let the pictures do the talking.

We were given money after the movie, thanking us for taking time off on a Monday to watch a late movie, that ended at 11.30pm.

No, I lied. They were vouchers.

It was the premier, and so the casts, directors, hosts and lot's more famous people came. I only got a few shots of the actors like Jack Neo and Mark Lee (those who came into the movie screening hall). But actresses like Felicia Chin and the cute LaoZhaBor came! No pictures of them though.

That's all that I have from the Movie! However, there's more photos that I took at Vivocity!

I brought my mum to the Top most floor, where I showed her the pool, and the lovely scenery leading to Sentosa.

While waiting for the movie to start, I managed to snap some photos which intrigued me.

This is a structure on the Top Floor. I like the intercepting image it sets. And I think the Beijing Olympics got their stadium idea from this? I don't know, you decide.

Singapore SuperHero Blog-Tastic Contest!

I've just spent 7 hours on this post. This post is about a contest that sends bloggers searching for their thinking hats. This contest is none other than "Singapore SuperHero Blog-tastic Contest"! Photobucket

Singapore Movie Fiesta 08 in collaboration with nuffnang is calling out to Singaporean bloggers to blog about what qualities and attributes Singapore's very own Super Hero should have.

I know I won't win this contest because this whole story sounds really far-fetched. But I guess it didn't hurt to set my mind to do some creative thinking!

Any way, I would just like to say, that this story was created solely by my imagination. And it's disgusting, i guess. And the drawings are pathetic, but I guess that adds to the whole stupid story. Hahaha. Here goes...

In the bustling streets of Woodlands, lives a petite little girl, by the name of Oi Ting Oose. Oi Ting Oose is a very quiet girl, too quiet for a 16 year old. Because of that, she never had any friends, except her pet dog, Rufus.

puppy

People simply found her weird.

First, being that she always carried Patrick the Starfish everywhere she wentPhotobucket.

When asked why she was so glued to it, all she said was, “he’s like my boyfriend”.

Second, being that she has this habit of picking her nose all the time.

dig nose

And instead of wiping it off or something, she collects it in potion bottles. disco bruce morphing potion

And last, being that she lives in a cardboard box! box

No one in school liked her because she was a very odd person. She was often bullied and no one came to help her. People even made fun of her name. Malays called her “Tikoose/Tikus” (mouse) and Chinese called her “pig noose”. She was always seen crying in the girl’s toilet, hugging her Patrick starfish.

It was a real pity though. Because Oi Ting Oose was a very intelligent girl. She scored straight ‘A’s and was also a greeNE Ambassador for the school. She took care of all the greeneries in school and was Head of all projects that linked to Nation Education. And that she was ugly. She was famous for all the wrong reasons. She made heads turn because she wasn’t drop-dead gorgeous, but because she was horribly ugly!

Photobucket

She was so ugly that she made Cinderella’s stepsisters feel pretty! But she was an innocent girl.

But this small, innocent girl in the day was terribly different at night.

Why? Because Oi Ting Oose was no ordinary girl. She had SUPER POWERS.

See, when Oi Ting Oose was young, She accidentally fell into a nuclear reactor, when her Mom visited Iraq during the ‘Iraq-Kuwait’ war.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Miraculously, She came out unharmed. And over the years, she discovered something magnificent. The "booger" that she picked out of her nose, was MAGICAL.

She was so intrigued by it, that she actually took up Witchcraft to have a better understanding.

Photobucket

Through the better understanding of this “mucus magic”, Oi Ting Oose also picked up a few spells, one of them is to make her prettier.

And from then on, her life changed, so did her name.

Her nickname became: Lady Sovereign of Slime.

She remained the weird child in the day, but when night time came, she transformed into a gorgeous lady with skin tight black leather costume. Photobucket

She looked marvelous.

Being an intelligent girl, she decided to be Singapore’s Super Hero and avenge her mom who died trying to save fellow Singaporeans from Dr. Singland and Spittyman.

Dr. Singland

Photobucketwas a nasty man who manipulated Singaporeans into believing that Singlish was the “in thing”. He used many techniques and strategies such as propagandapropaganda

and briberyBribe.

And unfortunately, Singapore fell into his trap, after gaining independence in the 1960s.

Spittyman who was his partner in crime, did nasty things as well.

Photobucket

He sends out transmissions every now and then to brain-wash people to spit. The transmissions have been sent to all parts of Singapore, influencing people to spit.Radio Waves 2小印度大門口

Elderly people in Kopitiams and those living in Little India have been strongly affected by this horrendous act.

Anyway, through her intelligence and witchcraft, Oi Ting Oose overcomed her power way better than any Super Hero could. She could control slime and traveled using it, like how Frozone does in Incredibles.

frozone 2

And she even created a belt to hang her potion bottles of (hardened mucus) slime as ammunition for her best ever creation, which is the ‘Slimo-beam 4100’Water Gun.

It has two functions:

1. Shoots slimy webs over people who spit on the floor.

2. Spray slime that diffuses into people’s blood and make them speak proper English!

You must be wondering why no plans were made to kill Dr. Singland and Spittyman. Well, it’s because they’ve been caught, but have escaped and are missing, just like Mas Selamat! But she’s trying her best!

So, this Superhero has to be made to real life in order to assassinate these EVIL people!

The End!

Well, I hoped you enjoyed it!
