Shoot down the Stars, for all we need is Peace

Earth Hour actually allowed me to divide my neighbourhood into two groups. One was '
People who care about Earth' and the other was 'People who couldn't even be bothered to lift their finger to turn off the light switches'.

Truth to be told, my neighbourhood fell in the
latter. And I sure am disappointed.

I actually had a picture in mind.

Maybe it was too much, but I thought that it would be cool if one's neighbourhood could have the existance of an exhilarating yet peaceful ambience.

But boy, was my neighbourhood far from the word 'Darkness'! Neighbours of mine were seen to have all their lights switched on, some even playing DVDs, computer games and even karaoke.

Okay, so maybe my neighbours don't bother about Earth Hour. Let's check out the neighbourhood.

The thought of seeing the HDB flats with their lights out was soon replaced by the actual sight that there were less than 10 flats with their lights switched off! And I bet that out of these 10 flats, maybe 7 or 8 of them had families that weren't at home, so the lights were switched off.

If I were an organisation that was promoting Earth Hour, I would have switched off all the corridor lights (and allow burglars to carry out their heist), put all the channels on TV on test screen.

Or better yet, make them 'suffer' like how we students did back in school, during Total Defence Day. The water supply was switched off (can you imagine how unhygienic it was with no water to wash up after using the toilet? Oh, and I remember that there was this one time in my Primary School, this kid took a big dump in the toilet and it couldn't be flushed down! The horror...), so were the fans and lights.

It's actually not torturous, for the fact that it is only for an hour.

It can't be helped because if it is a matter which is not compulsory, almost (Read: ALMOST) everyone would not even be bothered about it.

And to those numbskulls who weren't bothered about Earth Hour, see what Global Warming is doing to the polar bears!

"Potentially fatal to the polar bear, global warming has already left its mark on the species with smaller, less robust bears that are increasingly showing cannibalistic tendencies."

"The primary observation is that as the sea ice shrinks away, so are the polar bears -- they're not growing as big as they used to."

"The melting ice means not only shorter hunting seasons, but it also means the bears, who number some 20,000 to 25,000 worldwide, have to cross greater distances to reach their icy hunting grounds.

This has led to a deterioration of the bears' health, impacting their reproductive capacities and the cubs' chances of survival, experts warned."

" "We knew of polar bears killing and eating other polar bears," Steven Amstrup, a research wildlife biologist with the US Geological Survey, told AFP.

"But the difference was that this time the polar bears were clearly deliberately hunting other bears, attacking for example females in their denning area" in northern Alaska, he said.

"We assume that it was linked to nutritional stress."

Faced with the growing uncertainty concerning the ice, pregnant polar bears are increasingly denning on land, researchers have noticed."

I think that if no fast actions are taken to save these Polar Bears, they are bound to be the next Do Do Birds.

Earth Hour

Today, we are given the opportunity to take control of our Future. Regardless of age, race, nationality or background, we get to vote, and to let our voices be heard.

For just one hour, we can make a whole lot of difference, and this would show how much we care for the people around us, the animals living with us, and most importantly, how much we care about Earth, the place we call HOME.

The fate of our Future lies in our hands and ours only.

In a modernized world like ours, one would think of not how much we are helping Earth, but how much we can do in that one hour. Essays could be completed in that hour, you could watch your favourite television series on one hour and even complete a level in your favourite computer game.

But is it all worth it?

Can we not care about ourselves for a moment? And care for others?

There are droughts in places that used to have water in abundance;

The sea level rises, obstructing paths for both pedestrians and vehicles.

"Several times each year the regular lunar cycle of tides, riding on the ever higher mean sea level, brings the Pacific sloshing over onto roads and into neighborhoods. In the center of the larger islands the sea floods out of old barrow pits and even squirts up out of the coral bedrock. Puddles bubble up that eventually cover part of the airport on the main island of Funafuti and inundate homes that are not along the ocean."

Even erosion occurs.

And all this is caused by us, humans. And who suffers? Not only us humans, but every single living creature on Earth. Why should they suffer the impact of Global Warming when we humans are the ones to be blamed?

Polar Bears are one of the animals that are on the 'Endangered' list. One of the main reason for this is because of Global Warming.

If you have studied Geography, you would know that Global Warming raises the average temperature of Earth or in other words, increasing the global temperature. This, causes the sea levels to rise(because by raising the global temperature, it causes the polar caps to melt. Thus, raising the sea level.), and would without a doubt, change the pattern of precipitation all over the world.

What has it got to do with animals like the Polar Bears? Well, with the rise in sea level, is causes the polar to swim twice the distance they usually swim in order to find food. Many die due to over-exhaustion from the hunting.

And there you have it. Innocent animals die because of us.

So what to do? Vote Earth.

And look at the beauty of our hearts combines in saving our Future.

I am Voting Earth, are you?

If mother's were flowers, my mum would be the most beautiful one

When I went for the interview at TP, I was asked "What inspires you to be a teacher?"

My answer was, "My mother. Believe it or not, my mother is the most versatile person that I know. When I was little, I would tag along as she taught in her child care class. I would see that for hours and hours as I watched her in admiration. She taught phonics, art, music and movement, and about anything you needed her to do. She pushed a van that had broken down when she was having me in her tummy. She fixed pipes, climbed rooftops, and with her creativity, built or made things that were useful as tools around the house. She showed me that one had to be very patient when dealing with children. And I loved how the kids felt so comfortable around her. Adding the fact that my mum would talk about games, and ask them about themselves. Can you imagine how the kids felt, eyes all sparkly when they told their tales in excitement. My mum built a firm foundation for the kids, and that was not only through education, but by also making them into responsible and well mannered kids. Through her, I learned to love kids, and through her, I want to be there for the kids, and guide them through their journey in life. You don't have to be a mother to teach, but to teach, you have to be like a mother to the kids. And I want to be just that, just like my mum, to aid kids towards their success in the future".

I of course, exceeded the 1 minute limit that was given. But I guess, I made it a point to them that I did not look up to someone who was distances away, but someone who is just a few steps away, someone I love, and who loves me back.

Well, when I was younger, I never understood why my mother would always stand by the window to watch us as we make our way to the MRT or Bus. When we were away in camps or when my brother was in NS, she would check her phone every five minutes to wait for our calls. She always stayed up late to wait for us to return home, and there were many times where we came home and found her snoozing on the chair.

And sometimes, even though she was unwell, she would wake up early just to make breakfast for us. She would sit with us as we ate, and only go back to sleep after she saw us off.

Even when she was in Thailand or Malacca, she would call back every now and then to check in on us.

But all that, would of course be accompanied by nags. She would nag at us if we did things last minute. Sometimes she scolded us for not being independent enough, but when we did do things on our own, she would come in and do it for us. Then she would scold us again for doing things too slowly, or last minute. She always busied herself with out things, even when we could do fine on our own.

In an obvious way, my brothers and I are really pampered by her.

Sometimes, it annoys(it's not that we don't want her around, but she's a busy woman, and needs her rest!) us that she would rather stay up just to make sure that we have had our meals, rather than have an early sleep. And she would peep to check on whether we were doing fine, and would jump at the chance when we needed help. And how she always eat last so that there's enough food for us all. And how she'll eat the "not so nice" food, and let us have the nice ones. I guess that's what mothers are like, huh.

And the countless times she defended us against our dad (he's not the bad guy. It's just that having Commando parents is pretty tough sometimes. But it's a miracle my mum is brain washed at all.) And the times when she felt eh urge to slap someone else for bragging about their kids. She always treated us as the best of the lot. And she too, is the best of the lot.

She may nag alot, but then again, it's funny to see her kalang kabut around the house. And then when she realizes that we're laughing at her, she'll scold us and then have her revenge! Well, we treat her pretty much like our friend rather than mom. We'll tumble on top of her, hit her (jokingly), do things to make her ter pranjat, or just make fun of her. She too has her moments where she makes fun or imitates us.

Her "in" word right now? 'So gross', 'so lame', 'duh', 'whatever'. Hahaha, it's funny when she does it because she practically imitates me or my brother Vernon when we say it.

Anyway, a while back, more like many years ago, my brother and I bought a book for my mother, for her birthday.

You must be thinking "
wah lao.. birthday leh. Treat her go spa or buy something she wants lah. Buy book, somemore both of you share... Damn gonndu man".

What can I say! I was only 8! And before you stomp to my home to smack me on the head, let me say that the book that we bought was actually SPECIAL.

Animals

One word to describe the pictures above? That's right.
Cute.

They're so adorable, that you feel like going up to one of them, pinch them on the cheeks, or tickle them on the nose and behind the ear, or even give them a great big hug, don't you?

No one can not smile at a cute kitten that is playing with a ball of yarn, or a puppy trying to climb up the stairs. Admit it, if you saw a puppy pee on your door and then run away, you wouldn't beat the hell out of him. Instead, you would go "Aww, so cute!".

If you still don't get it, let me break the news to you. We are at the mercy of these animals. Especially the cute ones. They have us in their palms, or rather, paws. Make a mistake, it's okay, just flash an innocent face to them, the humans will fall for it.

Well, I was one of the victims. My dog, Junior, is cute. Come on, who has the heart to discipline a dog that has feet shorter than your forefinger, a body longer than your lower arm, and a face so CUTE?!? Junior has the "What am I supposed to do? I'm lost!!" face. In other words, a very 'goondu' face.

My family and I adore him very much, and we pamper him a lot too. He loves to eat Chicken, even though he's allergic to it. We tried substituting chicken for sardine, and he seems to be fine with it. He doesn't eat sausages unless it's fried. And he doesn't eat soup with rice, there has to be meat in there! And if the rice isn't stirred properly and covered with gravy, he'll leave the rice alone. And he loves sun tanning. He would find a spot at home that has the hot sun shining on the floor, and lay there till the sun is gone. He perspires alot, but he hates bathes And he loves the hair dryer ALOT. I made pillows for him, and it has been his chew toy. Other than that, he spends his day hunting for lizards and cockroaches. When he's in the living room, he sleeps with his head leaned against the leg of the chair. And the irritating bit is that, once he's there, he'll never move. And so, we have to move instead. It's the same when he's on the bed. He'll stretch out covering the bottom part of the bed. Tapping him or calling him wouldn't work, and so we have to curl our feet.

Junior has his own spot in the kitchen, near the toilet, where he pees. Since the day we got him, he never pees properly. It's always out of the newspaper. And he knows. Because whenever he pees, and it's out of the paper, he'll dash out of the kitchen.

Now, if I'm not mistaken, what he's trying to do is to "stealthily run away as quick as possible so that no one knows he was the culprit". It was cute at first, but over the years, it's becoming real irritating, having to pick up the papers and then mop it. My mum threatens to tie his "whistle" and would always scold him, literally asking him why he can't pee right.

My dad pampers him alot too, flooding him with hugs and kisses. My brother and I carry him around and whenever we do, he'll fall asleep on us. He's actually a pretty lazy dog. He doesn't bark, but instead makes friends with the Karang Guni Man. I wonder who will protect who when the burglar comes.

And as adorable as he is, he's actually getting pretty smart. He's becoming more and more picky on his food.

Since last month, I have been at home. And one day, my mum came into my room and said "Later when I call your name, don't have to come". I found it odd, but I nodded, and then resumed my game of Harvest Moon.

As predicted, my mum called my name. And sure enough, I didn't come to her. Now, this continued for a couple of days, weeks in fact. I was curious as to why she was always calling my name and one day, I decided to go to the kitchen, where she was calling my name.

I stood at the bar counter, and watched in amazement as Junior ran to the bowl whenever my name was called.

"Wah lao, use my name to ask Junior to eat?"

"See, it actually works. Junior's very naughty. Never call your name, he never eat. Besides, I've been using your name for a long time. And only your name works."

And true enough, as I observed, Junior dashes to his bowl whenever my name is called.

But sadly, this trick doesn't work anymore. I guess he realized that he too can play the game. And so whenever my name is called, he dashes to his bowl, and touched the food with his nose. Then he'll sit there and stare at my mum.

So now I have to be there to watch him as he eats, if not he'll skip his meal and start vomitting.

See how smart animals are?

I have to do my 'round' of spot-checking now.

And watch this!

Shame

Parents are the most sacred people in our lives. They gave us Life, bringing us into this mystical world of wonders. They gave us love, care and concern when we needed them most. They sheltered us and showered us with clothes and a pampered life with money. They were the first to fit us into clothes, guide us in our first steps in Life, and definitely the first to change our diapers.

We have disappointed them in many ways.

As babies:
From the embarrassment of screaming and crying in the buses and MRTs, to the shitting and puking at the most inconvenient times. From the nights we made them stay awake just because we needed milk or a change in diapers, to the times where we made them worry that they might lose us in shopping malls.

As adolescence:
From the times we threw tantrums at them, to the time where we demanded money from them to buy stuff that friends thought were "cool". From the rebellious act of defiance, to the stupid stuff we did with our friends just because it looked "cool". From the hurtful words we said about them, to the kind words we never said about them.

Yet all this while, despite our humiliating behaviour, they chose to stick by us, never giving up on us. True, sometimes they may say harsh words to us, but it's basically because we did something stupid. You may roll your eyes and stuff, but parents do do things for our own good. Even if they did some bad things, people do make mistakes isn't it? What about all the times you did stupid things to them?

And so I find it really disheartening to see youths nowadays still being really rude to their parents.

I have seen incidents where youths actually yell at their parents in the MRT, for no apparent reasons. Some wal real fast or real slow, leaving their parents infront or behind of them. Some talk really rudely to their parents, ending conversations in brief "yes" and "no". Some idiots even chose to ignore their parents.

I even have friends who are really afraid to be seen when they are with their families, or parents. It's funny seeing them hide, or try some way or another to avoid your gaze. Some even pretend to not see you at all.

I'm really curious, what's so embarresing about going out with parents or your family? I love going out with mine. I love how people stare with questions in their head, wondering how come my family has people of different skin colour and looks. I love spending time with my family because we not only get along by the food we like, but we're so lame, that it's impossible not to click. Furthermore, our parents are always updated on our daily lives, and so we could simply seat down with them, and talk about our Life.

If youths are treating their parents so badly because of how their parents dress, then I'd say that's bullshit. You don't expect your mum to go around wearing horrible skimpy looking hot pants, with bare backs tees, bling bling flip flops and tote backs right? I mean I'm not saying parents aren't allowed to wear all these, but it's basically only right for them to wear clothes of their age, for decency sake. Besides, clothes worn by youths nowadays are getting lesser and lesser, thinner and thinner, I wouldn't be surprised if a new trend comes out for youths to start wearing bra and panties, walking around Orchard Road.

If you're so smart to judge your parents based on their clothes, then why not spend your money to buy clothes you think is nice for them? Their age, but with the killer youth deisgns. Not a bad idea isn't it?

Stop hating your parents and start loving them, because they loved you when no one else did.

I've got a Great Mum

Round two of the Preliminary Examinations are here, and I've yet to study for any of the subjects. It kinda' sucks, to see everyone studying, and not cooperating with you by going on the "Procrastination strike". But it sucks even more to not study, and know that everyone else is studying, and passing their examinations.

Anyway, moving on to Today's Topic. The reason I my title for the post is as stated is well, everyone has a good mum, even if she's mean and nasty and rude towards you. And makes you do all the chores and spits at you if you missed a spot. But no matter what, we should be appreciative towards the people who brought us Life, the people who brought us to this world, even if we're liking it or not. And definitely to our mums, who go through so much pain in Labour.

See, I have always been commented to have one of the worst dressings ever. Maybe it's because people understand why I dress that way, or maybe it's just my taste in clothes. I wore wooden bracelets, chokers and belts. Yeah, I'm a fire hazard. Dark colours filled my wardrobe. I carried bags that resembled the ones monks carried.

People, friends especially, always made fun of me, because I wasn't dressed to the trend. But I liked how I dressed. Not only was I comfortable, I was relaxed, and I liked the Caribbean impression the clothes gave.

I wasn't the pretty one either. I never wore make up before. And I stopped wearing dresses when I was 5. The first few years of my adolescence age were filled with Basketball shorts, Fbts and dry-fit Jerseys. Till now, I never believed in being a "fashionista" because anyone, and everyone can follow trends, and trends would mean that you needed money to constantly "update" yourself. I was fine with being me, and I felt that the money spent on clothes could be put to better use, like food, and the SPCA.

I was more of a plain Jane, but with weird (as people claim) interests. I loved horror and gore, blood and sadistic movies. I love body piercing and tattoos, but people think it's horrible to hurt our own body. But I saw these as Art. I wanted corset piercings, tongue piercings, dermal anchor and definitely tattoos. But it's the fear of being judged by people, that stops me.

I was never in agreement with my friends, on the Hot guys. I guess my taste in guys also was very much different from my friends. Most simply asked me to be a Lesbian.

I was different. Even my taste in music differed. I liked some of the "in" music, like Chris Brown, Jordin Sparks, and definitely David Cook. But I turned more to Oldies, Heavy Metal and even the Blues. I loved how the Oldies had meaningful and soothing lyrics to them, unlike the very much trendy Rap that modern people abuse, by basically talking about money, drugs, women and sex. If you ask me about rap, I'd say I loved it back then, with artistes like Snoop Dogg, Bubba Sparks and Eminem.

Heavy Metal was only when I needed some Adrenaline pumping. It was good to listen to it when you're bored but never when you're angry, because these songs are known to stimulate more anger in you. Funny, but some of them actually have meaningful lyrics to them. But still, people found them as noise.

But the best songs that I like, are the laid back ones. Colbie Caillat, Micheal Buble, Jack Johnson, Jason castro and even Bob Marley. Songs that you can listen to, at the bar, or lounge. SLow paced and relaxing, it definitely gives the "chill" attitude.

People have often asked what I wanted to be when I grow up. They would often say that I should be some rebel who did some "on and off" jobs, because I resembled one in their eyes. Most of them would criticize me or laugh hysterically when I told them that I wanted to be in the Education System. Law has always been my father's dream and he has been pushing me to aim for it, but without the passion, no point in going after the dream. No?

Children has always been one of my love, together with Animals. My ambition is to either be in the Education System or be a Vet. I scratched off the idea of being a Vet, because animals are love, and it is a pleasure to heal them and take care of them. But I can't bear the idea of seeing them in their last struggle in death.

When I asked them what was so funny about me being an educator, they often said that they could not picture someone like me, someone who loves all the oddest things in Life, to inspire people. Some said that I talked or rather gossiped too much, but hey, I would never gossip about anyone unless it is of something that is really bothering me. I've never gossiped with someone who never gossip back, so you're just as gossipy as me.

Some even said that my stubborness and my mouth would get my into trouble. But I assured them, that I always fight for what's right, even if the whole world is against me. But I'll accept defeat if I'm really proven wrong.

I want to be a psychologist, and specialise in Early Childhood. But with the mockery of people I cherish most, my friends, how can I be determined? If they already think this way, what would others, people who don't know me, think of me?

It was hurtful to know of all these things. Most say I'm sensitive. So what's not sensitive to you?

That is why I turn to my mum,the saviour.

I don't know about all mums, but mine would always praise me for what I did. She never doubted in my capabilities, and was happy that wanted to carry forth her dream, of furthering into inspiring kids in Education.

My mum always said that I was prettier than any girl I compared myself with. And it always ended in a joke, with my thickskinned self claiming to win the Miss Singapore contests, that I decided not to sign up because I wanted to give others a chance to win, before I stepped up to the game.

And when I told my mum about all the feedbacks and problems that I was facing, she never fails to brighten things up. Though her words always make me giggle, because of the funny twist she puts in everything, her words do mean alot to me, because they actually drive me on, and not give up.

She often use other people as examples to boost my self esteem, and for that I am grateful. Despite her disagreements with the things I like, my mum has never once stopped me, but instead encouraged me,as she feels that I am aware of what I am doing.

My mum is lovely, and I'm glad that she has been by me for all my Life. I just wish that I could return the favour, and help her remove all her problems, just like how she did to mine.

Good night.

Ps: To Cheryl, Samantha, Yong Wei and all those who are wondering if I attended Omy's blog awards, I did! I was standing at the back most of the time. I didn't wave or said hi to you guys because I felt really awkward. And I like the whole "I don't see you, but you're here" kind of thing. Hahah, I can be a spy some day.

Well, if there's another big event, maybe I'll comeby and wave at you guys eh?
