Reviews on 12 Lotus and 4bia

Yesterday was Teachers' And Staffs' Appreciation day in my school. My class celebration went well as we enjoyed the Movie: Ratatouille and the food sponsored by Gek chong (chu) and some others. The performances for the concert was rather interesting, but I still preferred last year's performances although there were major cock-ups. But overall, it was still splendid.

Met up with YiLing and Lena after school as the rest had their own meet-ups too.

We decided to have our lunch at MacDonalds and after since none of us had any plans whatspever, we headed to Cathay to catch a Movie. We initially wanted to watch 4bia at 5pm but YiLing had to be back before the movie ended. And so, we chose another Movie: 12 Lotus, at an earlier timeslot.

Synopsis : "12 LOTUS" tells the story of singer Lian Hua (Mindee Ong) and the heartless men in her life who use and abuse her. Spanning over 1980s, 1990s till the present day, this film will play out against the backdrop of poignant hokkien songs, which will touch the audience with their resonance with the lead character. Movie starring Qi Yi Wu, Liu Ling Ling and Mindee Ong; huge household names following the success of the previous film "881".

Trailer:

I did not check out the trailer nor synopsis before I caught the movie, but I did read some reviews of it. The remarks were surprisingly bad, and so I did not expect much from the movie.

However, after watching the movie, I don't find it
That bad.

My Review:

12 Lotus is about the life chronicles of a little girl, who was aspired to be a successful Getai singer. Her father was her coach and he thought her through the hard way, by whipping her whenever she was out of tune. His words to her were : When there's no Pain, there's no Love. When there's no love, there's no Pain.

That was the start of her horrendous Life, where each stage of her Life was marked by each Chapter of the song "12 Lotus".

I could not find the movie's version, so I took the Karaoke version from Youtube.

This Movie showed how tough the world of Getai was, and that people are vulnerable when it comes to dealing with money, and Lian Hua just so happened to be the "toy" where people conned and passed her here and there, just so that they could earn cash in exchange for her.

I wasn't that attracted to the storyline, but I was more intrigued by the songs performed in the movie.

Here are some of the songs which I like, Ji pa ban is the Top Favourite for now. Hahah.
These are the best versions I can get from Youtbe.

I don't why I love Getai, maybe it's because of the flashy costumes, the dazzling lights and mist.
And even though I have I have no idea what some of the songs mean, I do enjoy watching to Getais. But after watching this Movie, I had a better understanding to the lyrics of some of the songs as there were English subtitles!

I still remember a time when I posted some videos Here

The songs from the Getai performance was definitely a unique one!

Anyway, after the movie, the three of us got bored and so we decided to take a bus to loop around Woodlands. After which, it was time for YiLing to head home, and so it was down to Lena and I. We returned to Causeway Point and walked around aimlessly. I then suggested catching 4bia, and we were just in luck. We arrived just in time for the show. At first I didn't believe when they self proclaimed "Thailand's top horror movie", but boy, did the movie change my mind!

Trailer:

Synopsis:

4bia or Phobia (Thai:
สี่แพร่ง or See Prang) is a 2008 Thai Thai horror film in four parts, directed by Youngyooth Thongkonthun, Banjong Pisanthanakun, Parkpoom Wongpoom, and Paween Purikitpanya.

The title is a pun on the word "phobia". The number 4 is in reference to the film's four short stories.

Happiness (Thai title: Ngao/Lonliness; directed by Youngyooth Thongkonthun) : A young woman, stuck in her apartment thanks to the cast on her leg, communicates with the outside world via cell phone and text messages. She begins receiving text messages from a stranger, who seems friendly enough, and there’s no reason for her to read between the lines when he mentions that he’s currently dwelling somewhere “cramped.” After sending the mysterious stranger her picture, things become spooky.

Tit for Tat (Directed by Paween Purikitpanya) : Imagine a childish payback like writing a joke about your friend's parents on the blackboard. Then imagine a payback of vocational schoolboys who curse people they hate on a deadly charm. Let's see how excruciating these curses will bring to the table and the bloody time is on to kills everyone who fact this event.

In The Middle (Directed by Banjong Pisanthanakun) : On a remote camping trip through a lonely jungle, four teenagers begin to tell ghost stories to entertain themselves. Eventually, the young men become frightened by their own stories and fight over who gets to sleep in the middle of the tent which they believe, is the safest and most secure spot to sleep...or so they think.

The Last Fright (Directed by Parkpoom Wongpoon) : Flight attendent Pim, goes aboard an airliner on a charter flight for the Princess of Khurkistan. What was supposed to be an ordinary flight turns into something tragic when the princess forms an allergic reaction to something she ate. After the royal house of Khurkistan requests that her body be sent back immediately for cremation, Pim (Chermarn Boonyasak) is required to remain on the plane and escort the body - the only passenger - for the return flight.

My review:

This movie is the scariest movie I've seen so far. Lena and I were still giggling when the girl in "Happiness"was scared and crying because she was actually texting a dead guy who infront of a car after his girlfriend broke up with him. His dad left a handphone in his coffin so that he could call or text when he was lonely or homesick. His spirit finally decided to pay her a visit and she was "pushed" out of her window, landing just when his crematorium van passed by. It was later shown that she was in the car that hit the guy when he ran infront of it.

And after that part of the movie, things started to get scarier. In Tit for Tat, there were this group of 5 hooligans who always bullied this boy. This boy was pissed at the constant picking at, and so he decided to fool around with Black Magic. He used a black book that had a "spirit" in it, and the person who stares at the words "I see you now" would die a horrible death. This part of the movie had the most gore as there were scenes where the showed the person's head going through the fan, a metal piece that flung and got stuck halfway through another person's head, a girl who had metal rods penetrate through her neck, and how a guy burned alive. The final one was how the last hooligan, gorged her eyes out so that she wouldn't die, as she could no longer see the "I see you now" that the "spirit" forces them to see.

There was a girl in the cinema who got so freaked out by the frightening bits and the look of the "Spirit" that she kept crying and begging her partner to bring her home.

Moving on to the next on, In the Middle.
These four boys were camping in the jungle, and when night came, they decided to scare each other with Ghost stories. One of the stories was about a Lady Ghost who would haunt the person sleeping in the corner, and would sit at his feet. They fought for places to sleep, and continued with their ghost stories. The topic slowly drifted off to Death, and one of them actually said if he died, he would haunt the person sleeping in the middle. The next day, they went white water rafting, and unfortunately, he died after trying to save one of the friends who was drowning. Therest could not find him and so they headed back to their campsite. In the middle of the night, he returned! All drenched and shivering, he changed and slept. The rest could not sleep as they felt that something was wrong. They were freaked out when one of them saw his body in the river.

In the end, they found out why he returned. It's because he wanted to tell them that they were dead too. They were too busy running away from him that they failed to listen to what he wanted to tell them.

The face of the dead guy was damn scary.

And last, The Last Fright.

A stewardess was asked to be the personal attendant for a Princess. The Princess was very mean, as she was rude and choosy. She even pushed a cup of coffee away, which scalded the stewardess's arm. The stewardess then took revenge by giving the Princess her meal (Which she wanted), which contained shrimps, which the Princess was allergic too.

The Princess died that day, and the Royal family ordered them to fly her back so that her body could be cremated within 15 hours. The trip back was hell for the stewardess as she was haunted by the dead body which was wrapped up like a mummy.

This final part was the scariest for me, and the movie actually showed the body sliding off from the chair, entering the cabin where the stewardess was, and it jerked when she tried to touch it. It also lay in her arms, when she tried to sleep. And the last part was, when she about to go crazy, the captain tie her up an mae her sit infront of the corpse. The corpse slowly opened up, and the corpse's face was rotting and black and her eyes were red and she looked vicious. And she slowly came towards the stewardess, vomitting the meal infront of her.

It was a horrible sight, which is still etched in my head.

But it soon came to light, why the Princess personally chose the stewardess, and did mean things to her. It was because she was having an affair with the Princess's husband!

The stewaress died as how the Princess wanted her to. By begging for forgiveness by kneeling infront of the Princess, but she was in a distorted manner. Freaky.

Beautiful movie, I must say.

But like what Lena said, why pay money to freak ourselves out? Hahaha.

Good night! And Happy Birthday Malaysia!!
